HPI temperature sensors and thermocouples are sensors packaged for instantaneous installation and application in hostile environments as seen in industrial monitoring, aerospace, automotive, or civil engineering applications to name a few. Waterproofing, pre-wiring, and mechanical protections are some advantages. User specified sensor types and configurations are always available.

Surface Mounted Free Filament Thermocouples
For Temperature Measurements On Low Expansion Materials

  For use on:
    • Carbon Composites
    • Alumina
    • Sapphire
    • Zirconia

Because of the unique convoluted design, tests have proved these thermocouples stay on when straight wire T.C.'s come off. Large differences in thermal expansion between metal thermocouples and low expansion materials generate large stresses in the wire and cause straight wire thermocouple cement bonds to fail. Convoluted thermocouples, bonded with strips of adhesive, allow bending in the unbonded portion to relieve expansion stresses.

Installation Methods:
The thermocouples can be installed by bonding with ceramic cement or by flame spray attachment techniques. First, a thin insulating precoat of cement or flame sprayed aluminum oxide ceramic about 1-3 mils thick is applied to the surface where the thermocouple is to be installed. The thermocouple is then taped in
place using 0.040" wide strips of teflon/fiberglass tape. The space between tape bars should also be about 0.050" to .080" wide.

ZGS Platinum Sensors

The ZGS Platinum sensor is a Zirconia dispersion strengthened platinum having superior strength to reference grade platinum. This permits easy bonding of the sensor with ceramic cements or flame sprayed alumina. The sensors should be bonded with WC-16 and AZ43 cements or flame sprayed using Rokide Hitec HTZ rod. The cements and the rod are special silica free materials formulated for use with ZGS platinum sensors. The ZGS platinum makes installation and performance superior to reference grade platinum. The sensors are supplied uncalibrated. Since the substrate to which they are attached influences the calibration, the sensors should be calibrated in place or on a piece of reference material similar to the substrate to which they will be attached.
