The U.S. Dept. of transportation requires strain gage installations to be made out of doors all year round and in some of the most severe application environments, ranging from humid tropical climates to wind and blowing snow in arctic regions. These gage configurations are used to measure vertical and lateral wheel/rail forces. Besides the difficulty of field installations, a typical day at the USDT subjects a strain gage to 25,000 cycles of strain at a peak level of 250 microstrain. Strain gages are expected to survive and provide accurate monitoring data for several years. Many gages will survive the lifetime of the track itself.
